60+ Course Evaluation Survey Questions (2026)

A free library of 60+ vetted course evaluation questions covering content quality, instructor effectiveness, materials, pacing, learning outcomes and on-the-job application. Built around the Kirkpatrick model. Copy them or deploy them in SpaceForms.

The right framework: The Kirkpatrick Model evaluates training at four levels — Reaction (did they like it?), Learning (did they learn?), Behavior (do they apply it?), and Results (did it impact outcomes?). End-of-session surveys cover Levels 1-2. A 30-day follow-up captures Level 3. A 6-12 month survey captures Level 4. Most L&D teams only measure Level 1 — and that's why training rarely shows ROI.

What makes a good course evaluation question

A good course evaluation question is timing-specific (end-of-session vs 30-day follow-up vs 6-month outcome), grounded in observable behaviour ("I have applied X concept to my work" beats "the course was useful"), and free of "halo bias" — the tendency for students who liked the instructor to rate everything else highly. The defining mistake is asking 20 vague satisfaction questions on day one and never measuring whether anyone changed their behaviour. The Kirkpatrick framework solves this by separating reaction from outcome explicitly.

The library below is organised into six categories spanning the full Kirkpatrick stack. Pick 3-5 questions for an end-of-session survey (Level 1 reaction + Level 2 learning self-rating). Pick 10-15 for a 30-day follow-up that measures Level 3 application. Pick 5-8 for a 6-month outcome survey targeting Level 4. Don't try to ask everything at once — the timing of the question matters more than the wording.

    How to use this library

    • End-of-session (Level 1-2): 3-5 questions, deployed in the last 10 min of the session.
    • 30-day follow-up (Level 3): 10-15 questions measuring on-the-job application.
    • 6-month outcome (Level 4): 5-8 questions on business/learning outcomes.
    • Make instructor items anonymous — content and self-rating can be identified.
    • Always include 1 open-ended "what would improve this?" — actionable insight lives there.

    1. Content Quality (Q1-12)

Content questions measure the substance of what was taught — relevance, depth, clarity, and accuracy. These are Level 1 (reaction) but also feed into Level 2 (learning self-rating).

    • 1. How would you rate the overall quality of the course content? (1-5)
    • 2. The course content was relevant to my role / goals.
    • 3. The course content was up-to-date.
    • 4. The depth of the content was appropriate for my level.
    • 5. Concepts were explained clearly and concretely.
    • 6. The course used real-world examples I could relate to.
    • 7. The course covered what was promised in the syllabus.
    • 8. Which topic was MOST valuable to you? (Open-ended)
    • 9. Which topic was LEAST valuable to you? (Open-ended)
    • 10. What topic do you wish had been covered but wasn't? (Open-ended)
    • 11. Was there any topic that felt unnecessary? (Open-ended)
    • 12. How would you rate the content compared to other courses you've taken? (Worse / Same / Better)

    2. Instructor Effectiveness (Q13-23)

Instructor questions should be anonymous — even high-performing instructors get sandbagged when feedback isn't anonymous (or coached up artificially when it isn't). Probe clarity, engagement, responsiveness and pace.

    • 13. The instructor explained concepts clearly.
    • 14. The instructor was engaging.
    • 15. The instructor was knowledgeable on the topic.
    • 16. The instructor responded thoughtfully to questions.
    • 17. The instructor created a welcoming learning environment.
    • 18. The instructor used examples that helped me understand.
    • 19. The instructor moved at a pace that worked for me.
    • 20. The instructor was prepared and organised.
    • 21. The instructor encouraged participation and discussion.
    • 22. What is one thing the instructor did especially well? (Open-ended)
    • 23. What is one thing the instructor could improve? (Open-ended)

    3. Materials & Resources (Q24-32)

Course materials — slides, workbooks, recordings, supplementary resources — are an underrated driver of long-term learning. Students often rate materials lower than instruction, which is where the leverage is.

    • 24. The course materials (slides, workbooks, recordings) were high quality.
    • 25. The materials were well-organised and easy to navigate.
    • 26. I expect to refer back to the materials after the course.
    • 27. The supplementary resources (readings, tools, templates) were valuable.
    • 28. The platform / LMS was easy to use.
    • 29. Audio and video quality was good (for recorded content).
    • 30. The exercises and assignments reinforced the concepts well.
    • 31. Which material was most useful? (Open-ended)
    • 32. What material is missing that you'd find useful? (Open-ended)

    4. Pacing & Structure (Q33-40)

Pacing is the most common course complaint. Some students always want it faster, some always slower — the goal is matching the modal student. These items separate pacing from content depth.

    • 33. The pace of the course was appropriate. (Too slow / Slightly slow / Just right / Slightly fast / Too fast)
    • 34. The course was the right length. (Too short / Slightly short / Right / Slightly long / Too long)
    • 35. The session length felt appropriate.
    • 36. There were enough breaks.
    • 37. The course was well-structured.
    • 38. Each session built on the previous one well.
    • 39. There was enough time for questions and discussion.
    • 40. What would you change about the pace or structure? (Open-ended)

    5. Learning Outcomes (Level 2) (Q41-50)

Learning outcome questions measure perceived knowledge gain. They should be tied to the original course objectives. Most powerful when paired with a true pre/post knowledge test.

    • 41. I learned new concepts that I didn't know before.
    • 42. I feel confident I can apply what I learned.
    • 43. I met my personal learning goals for this course.
    • 44. The course delivered on its stated learning objectives.
    • 45. My understanding of [topic] improved significantly.
    • 46. I can now explain [topic] to someone else.
    • 47. Rate your knowledge of [topic] BEFORE the course. (1-5)
    • 48. Rate your knowledge of [topic] AFTER the course. (1-5)
    • 49. What is the most important thing you learned? (Open-ended)
    • 50. What concept is still unclear to you? (Open-ended)

    6. Application & Outcomes (Level 3-4) (Q51-60+)

Sent 30 days post-course (Level 3 — Behaviour) and again at 6 months (Level 4 — Results). These items separate satisfaction from actual impact. The questions L&D teams skip — but they're the ones leadership cares about.

    • 51. In the past 30 days, have you applied something you learned in this course? (Yes / No / Not yet but plan to)
    • 52. Specifically, what have you applied? (Open-ended)
    • 53. What barrier(s) have prevented you from applying what you learned? (Open-ended)
    • 54. As a result of this course, my performance in [skill area] has: (Decreased / Stayed the same / Improved slightly / Improved significantly)
    • 55. As a result of this course, my confidence in [skill area] has: (Decreased / Stayed the same / Improved slightly / Improved significantly)
    • 56. What is one specific result you've achieved that you attribute to this course? (Open-ended)
    • 57. How likely are you to recommend this course to a colleague? (0-10)
    • 58. Would you take another course from this provider? (Yes / Maybe / No)
    • 59. What follow-up support would help you apply the learning better? (Open-ended)
    • 60. Anything else we should know? (Open-ended)

    Recommended scales

    • 5-point Likert (Strongly Disagree → Strongly Agree): default for instructor + content items.
    • 5-point pacing scale (Too slow → Too fast): only for pacing-specific questions.
    • 0-10 NPS: for the "would you recommend?" headline item.
    • Pre/post self-rating: 1-5 before and after, asked retrospectively to measure perceived gain.
    • Open-ended: 2-3 per survey, focused on "what would you improve?" and specific application examples.

    Frequently asked questions

When should a course evaluation be sent?

    Two-stage: brief end-of-session survey, plus a 30-day follow-up for Level 3 application.

    How long should it be?

    3-5 questions end-of-session, 10-15 for 30-day follow-up.

    What's the Kirkpatrick model?

Four-level training evaluation: Reaction → Learning → Behavior → Results. Use all four for serious L&D measurement.

    Should evaluations be anonymous?

Yes for instructor feedback. Content and self-rating items can be identified if you commit to acting on the data.

How do I get students to fill them out?

Deploy in-session, keep it short (3-5 Qs), share previous cohort's changes-made.
