    Why this matters

    HCAHPS scores feed directly into CMS Value-Based Purchasing — hospitals at the bottom of the distribution lose up to 2% of Medicare DRG payments. With nurse communication being the highest-scoring composite and reimbursement-linked, it is both the easiest composite to look "competent" on (everyone is near the top) and the hardest to differentiate on (the spread between top and bottom quartile is narrower than for quietness or pain management).
